Rethinking Downtown Commercial Waste Management

Practical lessons on containment, cleanliness, access, and day-to-day control in shared downtown environments

Date: Thursday, June 25, 2026
Time: 1:00pm – 2:30pm Eastern

Summary

In dense downtown districts, commercial waste and recycling are often managed in shared spaces, under heavy daily use, and with limited control over how containers are accessed or used. The result is usually the same: contamination, overflow, unauthorized use, recurring cleanliness issues, and operational friction.

This webinar will explore what more effective management looks like in practice.

Nigel Deacon of metroSTOR North America will open the session with a broad perspective on the operational and infrastructure patterns that shape waste and recycling performance in busy downtown environments. Suki Janssen of Athens-Clarke County will share lessons from downtown Athens, where Eco-Stations were introduced to support more controlled, consistent management of shared commercial trash and recycling in a high-traffic district. Gerard Brown of Rodent Man Consulting will bring a prevention-led sanitation perspective, focusing on how unmanaged waste conditions contribute to rodent pressure and why better control at the point of storage matters.

Suki Janssen is Director of the Athens-Clarke County Solid Waste Department, where she has spent more than two decades helping shape the County’s approach to waste reduction, recycling, composting, and public education. Before joining Athens-Clarke County, she worked with Keep Georgia Beautiful and began her career as a middle school science teacher, a background that still shows in her practical, education-led approach to behavior change and public engagement. She is widely recognized in Georgia’s solid waste and recycling community for her leadership, including bringing one of the state’s first Centers for Hard to Recycle Materials (CHaRM) to Georgia and serving in leadership roles with SWANA and other industry organizations.
