Dumbo installs new waste & recycling units with Manhattan Bridge backdrop

The Dumbo neighborhood in Brooklyn is taking strides toward a cleaner, greener future with the installation of a new metroSTOR waste and recycling unit, right beneath the iconic Manhattan Bridge.

The unit, which combines functionality and urban beauty, was introduced by Kalvis Mikelšteins, Alexandria Sica and the Dumbo Improvement District team.  It has been turning heads for all the right reasons! One of the most photographed spots in the city, it feels great knowing that the new unit supports the preservation of Dumbo’s historic streets. This eco-friendly bin seamlessly integrates into the NYC landscape, making waste management efficient and visually appealing.

The metroSTOR waste and recycling units serve as a symbol of progress, highlighting Dumbo’s commitment to sustainable infrastructure and cleaner streets. The units themselves are designed for durability and efficiency in high-traffic areas and the modular design allows for the collection of multiple waste streams in this busy area.

Built with robust, welded steel frames and an innovative coating process, these units can withstand the harsh conditions of an urban environment or a New York winter. The secure enclosure addresses the issue of can-diving, a challenge that unfortunately seems to be accentuated by the Deposit Return Scheme (DRS) in many urban areas, including across New York. This added level of security reduces street litter and disruption but also supports the wider goal of maintaining cleaner, more orderly public spaces; a concern many Downtown managers are actively working to tackle.

As Dumbo continues to prioritize making the neighborhood shine, the new metroSTOR units offer a practical and efficient solution to keep trash and recycling off the streets
