Bunker Hill Waste & Recycling Containerization Pilot, Boston Housing Authority
Boston Housing Authority (BHA), the city’s largest public housing provider, launched a waste and recycling containerization pilot at Bunker Hill, Boston’s biggest public housing development. Faced with issues like rat infestations, illegal dumping, and low recycling rates, BHA partnered with metroSTOR and RRS to install secure, clearly labelled enclosures for waste, recycling, and organics.
Since the rollout in mid-2024, the area has seen cleaner surroundings, improved recycling participation, and a 22% waste diversion rate. Encouraged by the results, BHA plans to expand the system across its entire housing portfolio.
