Smart composting: metroSTOR work across DC to install food waste smart bins

Washington, DC is getting serious about food waste – and smart about how it tackles it. The city has just rolled out its new Food Waste Smart Bin program, with 30 high-tech compost bins now installed across the District. Supplied by metroSTOR, the bins are part of a push to make composting easier, cleaner, and more accessible, especially in multi-family housing areas.

metroSTOR’s F-Series organics carts are purpose-built for urban spaces, with hands-free foot pedals, rodent-resistant design, and smart tech like access control and fill-level sensors. That means cleaner bins, less contamination, and smarter collection routes.

DC’s Department of Public Works (DPW) worked closely with local communities to choose the best locations – so if you live in the District, composting your food scraps just got a whole lot easier.
