Sacramento’s River District Leads the Way on Cleaner Streets

The River District in Sacramento has launched a new litter and recycling containment programme, aiming to tackle street waste and improve the look and feel of its public spaces. Installed earlier this year in partnership with metroSTOR and the City of Sacramento, the durable new enclosures are already making a visible difference.

Located just north of downtown, the River District faces unique challenges as home to a mix of businesses, housing, and one of the city’s largest unhoused populations. Traditional bins often struggled with misuse, fire risks, and windblown litter, but the new steel-built housings provide a safer, more resilient alternative. Designed with hands-free access, dual recycling options, and custom wraps to brighten streets, the project reflects Sacramento’s commitment to sustainability and community pride.
