Berkeley, CA: Downtown Pilot Project

Set on the edge of San Francisco Bay, Berkeley is known for its diverse culture, college-town energy and vibrant neighborhoods. Like many busy cities, it faces ongoing challenges with trash management in its public spaces. Standard city trash cans have proven easy for animals to get into but the more robust options, such as bear-proof cans, were clunky and visually unappealing. With issues ranging from durability and security, to aesthetics and rodent control, Berkeley has been searching for a better solution.

Downtown Pilot

The Downtown Berkeley Association, which manages the city’s lively central district of arts, dining and entertainment, partnered with metroSTOR on a pilot project to test new containment solutions. With thousands of daily visitors, Downtown Berkeley generates high volumes of trash and needs containers that are secure, accessible and able to maintain the district’s visual appeal.

The pilot installation demonstrated key advantages of metroSTOR units, including durability, hands-free operation and resistance to both rodents and rummaging.

Client Feedback

We are very pleased with the durability and security of our metroSTOR demonstration unit, as well as hands-free operation, rodent barrier and rummage resistance. We look forward to deploying more metroSTOR units in our district.
