City of Hailey’s Successful 24/7 Food Waste Drop-Off Programs

Faced with long winters, high disposal costs, and a landfill 100 miles away, the City of Hailey launched a 24/7 community food waste drop-off program to offer residents a simple, affordable alternative to curbside collection. With funding from the Idaho Department of Environmental Quality, secure metroSTOR enclosures were installed in key locations, providing easy access via keypad or app and enabling local composting within the valley.

Since its launch in late 2023, the food waste drop-off program has expanded rapidly, with five active sites, strong resident engagement, and minimal contamination. Hailey’s flexible, low-maintenance model has proven highly effective for a small rural city – offering a scalable solution that’s already inspiring other communities to rethink food waste collection.
