Smart composting: metroSTOR work across DC to install food waste smart bins
In a significant step toward achieving the District’s Zero Waste goals, Washington’s Department of Public Works (DPW) has launched its Food Waste Smart Bin program, introducing the first 30 innovative food waste collection units citywide. The units, supplied by metroSTOR, are designed to facilitate composting and expand accessibility for food waste recycling across Washington, DC.
DPW’s new Smart Bin program builds upon existing composting initiatives, including Food Waste Drop-Off Sites at farmers markets and the Compost DC: Food Waste Collection program. These combined efforts aim to divert 80% of the city’s waste from disposal and contribute to a more sustainable waste management system.
Mayor Bowser’s administration continues to prioritize sustainability and waste reduction, ensuring that all District residents, especially those in multi-family housing, have access to food waste recycling resources. DPW engaged the community in selecting locations for the smart bins to maximize accessibility and participation.
